The appropriate interval varies with pets, occupancy, filtration, renovation activity, smoking, moisture events, and the amount of dust entering the system. How often should air ducts be cleaned?

Our vacuum trucks create powerful continuous negative pressure while technicians use compressed-air tools, specialized agitation equipment, HEPA-filtered equipment where appropriate, and other tools selected for the duct material, layout, accessibility, condition, and type of contamination. We do not use rotary brush systems or rely on one aggressive cleaning method for every type of ductwork.
Truck-powered equipment is used wherever practical. For upper floors and other locations the truck cannot reasonably reach, we use portable negative-pressure and collection equipment appropriate to the application.
Many companies marketed as air duct cleaners do not perform complete cleaning in accordance with the National Air Duct Cleaners Association’s ACR Standard. Even a company following the same process standard cannot duplicate the Duct Doctor cleaning system because its primary vacuum equipment and several supporting tools are proprietary, purpose-built, and unavailable to competitors.
How does negative pressure keep dust and debris contained?
Negative pressure keeps loosened dust and debris inside the duct system until it is captured and removed. Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey connects the system to powerful vacuum collection equipment, causing air to move through the ductwork toward the collection unit rather than allowing contaminants to escape into the home.
This effectively turns the inside of the duct system into a containment zone. Are supply ducts and return ducts both cleaned?
Yes. A complete air duct cleaning includes both the accessible supply and return sides of the HVAC system, along with the trunk lines, branch ducts, registers, grilles, and other accessible air-distribution components.
The system works like a circuit: supply ducts carry conditioned air into the home, and return ducts carry air back to the heating and cooling equipment. Dust and debris accumulate throughout that complete air path.
Cleaning only one side, a few selected ducts, or only the areas immediately behind the registers leaves part of the system contaminated. Your Service Appointment
What to expect before, during, and immediately after a residential air duct cleaning appointment.
How should I prepare for air duct cleaning?
A little preparation helps the cleaning go more smoothly. Before your appointment, please make sure our technicians can reach the HVAC equipment and each supply and return register. Move small furniture, rugs, or decorative items that are blocking access, and let us know about any registers hidden beneath beds, behind furniture, or under rugs.
Please keep pets in a separate room or another secure area while we work. Our technicians will be moving throughout the home, and exterior doors may be opened as equipment is brought in and out.
It is also helpful to mention any attic, basement, or crawlspace access, known HVAC issues, recent construction or water damage, or rooms that need special attention.
What happens when the technicians arrive?
When our technicians arrive, they’ll introduce themselves and take a few minutes to walk through the home with you. They’ll confirm the scope of work, locate the HVAC equipment and accessible supply and return registers, and ask about any concerns such as recent remodeling, water damage, pets, or rooms that need extra attention.
They’ll then explain how the cleaning will be performed, bring in the necessary equipment, and protect the work areas as needed before beginning. You are welcome to ask questions at any point during the service.
The initial walkthrough makes sure everyone understands the plan and allows our technicians to set up efficiently and clean the system thoroughly.
How long does air duct cleaning take?
Most residential air duct cleaning appointments are scheduled in approximately four-hour blocks. The actual time depends on the size of the home, the number of HVAC systems, the ductwork layout and accessibility, and the amount of contamination being removed.
A smaller, straightforward system may take less time. Larger homes, multiple systems, difficult access, complex ductwork, or heavy contamination can require longer. Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey cleans the entire accessible air-distribution system properly rather than rushing through the job to meet an arbitrary time limit.
When scheduling your appointment, we’ll ask a few questions about the home and HVAC system so we can reserve enough time to complete the work thoroughly.
Will air duct cleaning create a mess in my home?
No. Professional source-removal air duct cleaning is designed to contain dust and debris rather than release it into the home.
Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey keeps the duct system under continuous negative pressure while accumulated material is loosened and directed into the vacuum collection equipment. Our technicians also use drop cloths, corner guards, and other protective measures where needed.
You will see hoses and equipment moving through different rooms during the service, but the work should not leave your home dusty or dirty. Before leaving, our technicians remove their equipment, clean the areas associated with the service, and make sure the HVAC system is ready to return to normal operation.
Should I leave my home during air duct cleaning?
No. Most homeowners remain home during air duct cleaning, and there is generally no need to leave during a standard cleaning.
Our technicians will move from room to room as they clean the supply and return ductwork, so hoses and equipment will temporarily be present in different areas of the home. You can continue with most normal activities, work from home, ask questions, or observe parts of the cleaning as long as you remain clear of the active work areas.
Please let our technicians know about young children, secured pets, mobility concerns, remote meetings, or rooms that need to remain quiet. We will coordinate the sequence of the work to minimize interruptions.
Will I see dust coming out of my vents during the cleaning?
In almost every home, no. During standard source-removal cleaning, Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey keeps the duct system under continuous negative pressure so loosened dust and debris travel toward the vacuum collection equipment rather than into the living space.
In certain in-slab systems or layouts where the vacuum cannot be connected to an accessible trunk, we may use our vent-to-vent cleaning protocol. A small amount of dust or debris may occasionally become visible near a register while an individual branch is being cleaned, but this is temporary and remains part of the active cleaning process.
Our technicians collect any material that becomes visible and clean the affected work area before leaving. Dust and debris removed during the service are contained, collected, and taken from the property along with the rest of the material removed from the HVAC system.
Do you clean the furnace or air handler too?
Yes. A complete air duct cleaning includes the accessible air-side portions of the furnace or air handler that are part of the home’s air-distribution system. Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey cleans the blower compartment and other accessible areas through which air passes between the HVAC equipment and the supply and return ductwork.
These areas often collect dust and debris, so leaving them untouched would leave part of the air path contaminated.
The evaporator coil is evaluated separately because it does not routinely require cleaning as part of every duct-cleaning service. When coil contamination is present and the coil is safely accessible, coil cleaning is available as an additional service.
Our technicians will explain any condition that needs attention and discuss the appropriate cleaning or maintenance options with you.
Should I change my HVAC air filter after air duct cleaning?
Yes, but you usually do not need to change it immediately.
If the existing filter is still clean and in good condition, Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey generally recommends leaving it in place for several days after the cleaning and replacing it within about a week. Fine dust already suspended in the home’s air may pass through the HVAC system several times before it is captured. Allowing the system to continue operating gives the existing filter more time to collect those remaining airborne particles before a fresh filter is installed.
This does not mean dust or debris was left inside the cleaned ductwork. It simply allows the filter to continue cleaning the air already present throughout the home.
If the existing filter is dirty, wet, damaged, or overdue for replacement, it should be changed immediately. Because HVAC filters come in so many different sizes and types, our technicians cannot carry every possible replacement on the truck. If you have the correct filter available, they will be happy to install it for you as a courtesy.

Ductwork, Mold, Treatments, and Odors

Will air duct cleaning damage my ductwork?
No. Professional air duct cleaning should not damage ductwork that is in serviceable condition when the cleaning method is matched to the material, construction, and condition of the system.
Sheet-metal ducts, flexible duct, fiberglass ductboard, Thermopan® systems, and in-slab ductwork cannot all be cleaned the same way. Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey follows the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) ACR Standard and uses compressed-air tools, specialized agitation equipment, and controlled negative pressure selected for the system being cleaned. We do not use rotary brush systems.
Damage is more likely when aggressive or inappropriate equipment is used, or when technicians fail to recognize fragile, deteriorated, or poorly installed ductwork. Cleaning can also uncover damage that was already present but hidden from view, such as torn flexible duct, loose connections, deteriorated ductboard, or disconnected sections.
If our technicians find existing damage, we will show you what was found and discuss the appropriate repair or replacement options before performing additional work. Because we also fabricate, install, and repair ductwork, many issues can be addressed without involving a separate company.
Can mold inside air ducts be remediated?
Yes, but the correct remedy depends on the duct material, its condition, and how deeply the mold growth has penetrated.
Mold on accessible sheet-metal ductwork can usually be physically removed through professional source-removal cleaning. Internally lined galvanized ductwork is a more specialized exception. When the acoustic liner remains structurally sound, Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey can often use compressed-air tools and specialized agitation equipment to remove growth and embedded contamination, followed by an appropriate antimicrobial treatment and encapsulant when warranted.
Most other porous HVAC materials cannot be reliably remediated once mold has penetrated them. Mold-contaminated flexible duct, wet or deteriorated fiberglass insulation, and colonized ductboard generally require replacement. Limited treatment of ductboard may sometimes provide a temporary measure, but it is not equivalent to permanent remediation.
The moisture source must also be identified and corrected before the HVAC system is remediated. Otherwise, mold growth is likely to return. For significant mold projects, cleaning or replacing the affected ductwork and accessible HVAC components is generally one of the final steps after the original contamination and moisture problem have been addressed.
Because Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey cleans, treats, repairs, fabricates, and replaces ductwork, we can evaluate the actual conditions and complete the appropriate combination of cleaning, encapsulation, repair, or replacement.
Can antimicrobial treatments be applied inside air ducts?
Yes. Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey can apply an antimicrobial treatment to appropriate HVAC surfaces after professional source-removal cleaning.
Antimicrobial treatment is not a substitute for cleaning. Dust, dirt, and accumulated debris can prevent the product from reaching the surface beneath them, so the contamination must be physically removed first.
We may recommend additional treatment when microbial contamination is suspected, stale or musty odors are present, or the HVAC system has been affected by past water intrusion or mold remediation and reducing microbial activity may be appropriate.
Duct Doctor of Southern New Jersey uses EPA-registered, quaternary ammonium-based antimicrobial products selected for the intended surface and application. Each product is applied only to suitable surfaces and strictly in accordance with its EPA label and manufacturer instructions.
We do not use fragrances or air fresheners inside HVAC systems. At Duct Doctor, we believe the smell of clean is the absence of odor—not the addition of perfume. Our goal is to remove and treat the source of the problem rather than cover it up.
Can air duct cleaning reduce odors in my home?
Yes. When an odor originates inside the HVAC system or is being circulated through it, professional air duct cleaning can often reduce it substantially.
Dust, pet hair and dander, cooking residue, smoke residue, pest debris, and microbial contamination can accumulate inside the supply ducts, return ducts, and accessible air-side components. Each time the system operates, those materials may continue contributing to stale, musty, smoky, or otherwise unpleasant odors.

Not every household odor comes from the HVAC system. Carpeting, upholstery, walls, insulation, drains, moisture problems, and other materials can also retain or produce odors. Can pet hair and pet dander be removed from air ducts?
Yes. Pet hair, dander, and the dust that collects with them can be removed from the accessible parts of the HVAC duct system.
Pet hair tends to collect in return ducts, register boots, and other areas where air is drawn back toward the heating and cooling equipment. Dander is much finer and can travel farther into the system before settling. In many cases, the buildup is substantial.
Even when the home looks spotless, the ductwork may still hold years of material left behind by previous occupants. Most buyers also have no reliable way to know when the system was last cleaned or whether the previous cleaning was complete.
Professional source-removal cleaning gives you a clean starting point before you settle in. A fresh coat of paint and clean floors do not tell you what is inside the HVAC system.
Can air duct cleaning help with allergies?
